The Open Masters Games in Abu Dhabi brought together more than 25,000 Masters athletes representing over 90 nationalities, competing in 38 different sports. Among them were seven Spencer swimmers who achieved an amazing medal count of 18 golds and 13 silvers.

The event kicked off with the Open Water Swimming, on Hudayirat Island, with perfect conditions and a water temperature of 21 degrees. Michael Read and Jamie McKay were competing in the 5k and won gold and silver respectively, while Tony Cherrington and Alan Parkins both won gold in the 2.5k and Amanda Heath took silver in the 1.5k.

This was an amazing achievement for Esther, as she slipped and fell the evening before the pool events, badly injuring her wrist. 3 days later, she was able to race tentatively, starting in the water and having to work hard to catch the rest of the field. Sadly, she had to miss her other events.

The event presentation was extremely professional, with competitors announced individually as they walked out from the call room, and the medal presentations were highly choreographed.

A small in numbers, but great in ambition, Spencer team travelled to Swansea for three days of racing at the Wales National Pool. This was a long meet: starting at 8.25am on Friday morning and finishing at 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

The racing was very competitive and fast, as expected, with Spencer swimmers raising up to the challenge and coming back with 18 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Spencer swimmer of the meet was the incredible Dan Cotton who broke three British Records, 200 back, 200 free and 200 IM. Notable mentions include Guy Emerson, who after a long journey back to fitness won a fantastic gold in the 50 back. And our legendary Amanda Heath who won 5 golds, 200/100/50 breaststroke, 200 IM and 400 IM.

There was success in the relays too with golds and silver medals.

A superb meet, and a great chance to race together as a team. Looking forward to the next competition!

An impressive display at Swim Wales 2023 by a strong Spencer contingent. The medal haul is particularly outstanding in the gold category. The highlights must be Di Ford’s two world records on 50 and 200 breast and Amanda Heath’s European record on 200 fly. Also to note Andy Chamberlain’s celebrating his 50th birthday with a 400IM win and 200 breast silver.

First competition of the year in the bag. A challenging one as it comes after the Christmas break, and one where you can test yourself and set some objectives for the coming months.

For many Spencer swimmers without access to a long course pool facility (many are still lamenting the closing down of Crystal Palace back in 2020), the challenge is even greater, so well done to all that signed up and raced on the weekend of the 21/22 January.

As ever when Spencer swimmers compete, there were remarkable performances to be noted: record breaking ones, and of those who braved to try new events or are in the process of coming back from injuries.

Diane Ford

Diane Ford, World Record Breaker

In the 80-84 category, the truly outstanding Di delivered two World Record breaking performances in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke; in the latter she went 6 seconds faster than the previous record. On top of these, Di also broke the European record on 50 breaststroke. Fabulous swimming.

Chris Dunn

Chris Dunn, 11 events, 11 wins, 6 records

The extraordinary Chris, at 77, gave a lesson of stamina by racing in 11 events, winning all of them and breaking 6 records along the way. Chris broke the 200 free European record (2:35.40), the 400 IM British record, and broke event records in 800 free (11:30.10), 50 free (30:73), 100 back (1:28.44), 200 IM (3:12.69), 200 back (3:10.87). Inspiring performances and humbling for many of us watching from much younger ages!

Karen’s story
I have a history of entering this meet and then wimping out at the last minute, but not this year I’ve just aged up (55-59 years) and needed to get some times on record in anticipation of entering Nationals later in the year. I wasn’t feeling great going into the weekend but I did manage to swim all my events, namely 200, 400, 800 free, 200IM and 100 fly.. I was delighted (amazed actually!) to win gold in the 100 fly, plus silvers in the 200IM and 800 free with a 4th in the 400 and 6th in the 200. But more importantly I now have those times on record for future reference.

The highlights for me included swimming head to head with teammates Laura, Suzanne and Hana, and watching the amazing Spencer-ite record breakers. It was great to catch up with many familiar faces again (both from Spencer and further afield) and I even had time to relax with a coffee (thanks Jane!).

Karl’s story
It was great to represent Spencer Swim Team at the K2 Swim South East long-course championships. This was my first long-course competition since returning to swimming as an adult, so a new experience. I tried out in some longer-distance events, 400m and 800m freestyle, as well as 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle and 50m fly. I received great advice from many of my Spencer teammates on how best to approach these longer races, and I largely stuck to my race plans, resulting in some satisfying performances that will provide qualifying times for future events. I managed to produce performances that delivered age-group bronze medals in both the 400m (5:17) and 800m (11:16) freestyle, and a silver medal in the 200m (5:25). It was a good couple of days of competing and set some benchmarks for the year ahead!

Travelling to Sheffield a strong Spencer contingent reunited to race, meet old competitors, swim together in relays and take part in what truly is a huge celebration of swimming at the highest level in the UK. This is a must-do event in the iconic Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

This year Spencer finished seventh out 265 clubs, just 3 points away from fifth position. An incredible improvement from last year’s 31st overall standing. What an achievement! Superb swimming, record breaking relays and building on our welcoming club spirit with new recruits and old friends.

We must mention Hodzii ElRidi who came from her native Egypt to race with us once more. Hodzii swam her signature events, the 400IM, placing 6, 200 fly, placing 4, and 200IM, placing 5, as well as taking a bronze in the women’s 4×200 free relay in the women’s 160 age group. Hodzii has been a Spencer out-of-town (out of continent!) swimmer since 2015, and was a Committee member volunteering as membership secretary from 2017-21, her generosity for the club is to be commended.

Another special mention has to be Robyn Le Friec who did a clean sweep in all butterfly events coming first in the 50m, 100m and 200m events: total domination.

Enjoy some of our swimmer’s stories and until next year!

Karen’s story
It was great to be swimming in my home city of Sheffield after a three year absence. I hadn’t had the best prep for this meet and was nervous about racing the 1500m again. After a tough race and much to my surprise, I beat my time from 2019 and came 4th!

The 400m free proved to be equally positive as I swam faster than in 2018.

In Spencer tradition I swam in several relays and was rewarded with a bronze medal in the W 4 x 200 free relay (age 160-199).

Finally, it was wonderful to catch up with old friends again and even better to meet up with family whom I haven’t seen since pre Covid times.

Laura’s story
The annual return to Ponds Forge in Sheffield marked a real return to form post illness for me, whilst also trying out a new event.

First up the 1500m freestyle. I hadn’t swam this event in a race for 20 years, last time as an age grouper in my club champs back home. I finished the race in 23:03 ranking 4th in age group which was awesome.

Wildly underestimating how much the 1500m would tire me out I also did the 200m free individual and a leg of the 4x200m freestyle relay on Friday. Our relay time came 3rd in our age group so we came away with a cheeky bronze medal! Well done and thank you ladies – Karen Bassett, Hodzii and Emily Hayter.

Not entirely recovered by Saturday I did a very painful 400m free individual, but coming in 4 seconds quicker than what I swam in May, I can’t really complain!

By Sunday afternoon I felt ready for the 800m freestyle. As an age grouper this was always my strongest event. I did the 800 in 11.51 and came third in my age group! I couldn’t believe the time: it was 15 seconds faster than Aberdeen in June, and I’d also smashed my pre-illness PB proving that I truly am back to fitness post cancer and that #thisgirldefinitelycan! I was really stoked about my individual bronze medal. A perfect end to a brilliant weekend.

Amanda’s story
Highlight of the weekend was our World Record in the women’s 4×100 medley team (with Helen Trippe, Esther Iseppi and Di Ford.) It was the Saturday evening session, and we were all a bit tired by that stage, so it was touch and go, but Di brought us home with a superb front crawl leg (I think she thought/wished she was doing breast!) to knock a few tenths off our own record. Earlier in the day, the same team broke the European record for the 4×50 medley (which wasn’t ours already).

My individual results were a mixed bag: absolutely on target for 200 and 400 IM, where I broke my own European records, plus silver in the 100 IM. Disappointed that I didn’t manage to break my world records in the 100 and 200 breast, but surprised and delighted with my British Record in the 50 breast (I’m not a sprinter) and my bronze in the 100 free in 1.13.99, my fastest time in 8 years (I’m not really a 100 freestyler either!).

The thing I love most about Sheffield is meeting up with old friends and talking to new ones – but with a packed agenda of swimming, there is never enough time to catch up with everyone you want to.

Matthew’s story
It was so lovely to see some of the Spencerites I first met at Crawley and to meet many more. Everybody was so friendly.

This was my first ever nationals. And wow! What an experience. So amazing to be amongst so many incredible swimmers and to see Ponds Forge all dressed up like the swimming on the tele. (The last time I swam at Ponds Forge, it was a much more low key affair. It was in a public session whilst working in Sheffield and I was literally the only one in the pool.)

Friday was a tough day. I did 1500m in the morning, 100m back, 200m free and 50m free relay in the afternoon and another 200m free relay in the evening.

Swimming highlights were a 4th in my individual 100m back and a “pity bronze” in the 4x200m relay. This was the first time I’d done any relays this millennium.

Well done to all swimmers that raced at the South East Region Masters SC Champs in Crawley last week. Lots of fast swimming and personal bests, records and medals. well done Emily and Sally and Barbara for improving on her event course 100 breaststroke record. Here are some personal stories from the event.

Di, Roma, Esther and Amanda
We were particularly pleased with our 3 British records in the 280+ women’s 4×50, 4×100 and 4×200 Free, as that means that Spencer holds all short course relay records in that age group. We took the 4×50 from Kings Cormorants, and 4×200 from Mid Sussex Marlins, both regular competitors of ours in the older age group relays. The 4×100 was a Spencer record, set in 2013 by Alison Gwynn, Muriel Hitchcock, Diane Ford and Jean Howard Jones in Sheffield. Di joined Roma Kiely, Esther Iseppi and me for the new record.

Matthew’s story
The SSE Short Course Masters at Crawley K2 was my first proper outing for Spencer. I did do the a 400m free in the first session of a meet at Barnet in July, but I was Billy No Mates again. (That was usually the case with my previous club!) It was lovely to meet lots of Spencerites and to put faces to names. Everyone was so welcoming. I sat with Esther and Amanda, because Esther was the first person I came across in a Spencer shirt (not really knowing what anyone looked like). So, I was an interloper in the World Record Holders’ Section…

The swimming got off to an inauspicious start: I did a lifetime PB in the 400m, but got disqualified. Apparently, you’re not allowed to wear a watch. I didn’t know that, but then I’ve only been competing since 1976…

After that things picked up: I got a silver in the 100m free (1:05.71), a bronze in the 200m free (2:24.15) and to my astonishment, a gold in the 50m back (33.12) – 55-59. I was astonished because, whilst I do consider myself a backstroker, I’m no sprinter and anyway, thought I’d lost the knack. I only entered it because otherwise I’d have had a long wait between races. It’s looking like it might be 3rd best in the country so far this year, which for those of us not breaking world records for fun, is worth having. (I’m usually “comfortably mid table” in such rankings.)

So, thank you so much Spencerites for including me. I’ll hopefully see a lot of you in Sheffield.

Amanda’s story
I was delighted to break my world record for 200 breast by just over 2 seconds in 3.07.97. Having said in my Rome interview that I don’t think about anybody else in my races, this time I was thinking “just relax and stay with Barbara and you’ll get a good time”. Sure enough it worked, so thank you Barbara (in the Lane next to me)!

Also, for the record, I broke my European 200 IM record by a few tenths.

Olegas’ story
My times did not completely suck. I mostly fulfilled my targets which were far from my PBs but showed that my fitness is closer to where I want it to be. I got 3 medals out of 4 events: 100 and 50 free bronze and 50 back silver.

Not bad at all considering Olegas trains once a week at the moment

By Amanda Heath

There is something very exciting about watching the elite major international swimming championships on TV and knowing that you will be swimming in the same venue a week or so later. This is what has happened for the World Masters Championships since 2015 and for the Europeans in 2016 in London and again this year, 2022, in Rome. It’s very motivating and all part of the preparation for me.

Tony and Amanda both won silver in their respective 3k Open Water races

However, the news that the Elite 25k Open Water had to be abandoned part way through due to weather conditions and the fact that just watching the 5k made me feel seasick did not bode well for my Open Water race. The Masters Open Water 3k was held over 3 days, shortly after the Elites. On the first day, Tony Cherrington and Peter Stephens staggered out of the water with a not so reassuring it’s fun out there, you’ll love it. Tony was the first GB medallist of the whole Championships with a silver. I was swimming on the third day, in the very last wave, which was combined women’s 60-64 and 65-69 age groups. By then the waves had calmed and it was only a little choppy towards the end, at which point, I couldn’t really change my mind and get out. The course was not particularly well sign posted, with the buoys a long way apart, but I was lucky enough to team up with a German girl in the younger age group. We swam together all the way, with her taking bronze in 60-64 and me silver in 65-69.

Then it was on to the Stadio in Rome – and as soon as you hit the water for warm up, you knew it was something special. Fabulous surroundings and the water felt great. I was delighted that my main events, 100 and 200 breast were in Stadio and I made the most of it. Men’s and Women’s events alternated between Stadio and Pietralata, another great facility a little way out of the city. The competition was very patchy, extremely tough in some age groups/events, much weaker in others. This was possibly due to the limit of 3 pool events and the higher than normal entry fees. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much competition in my age group in any of my events, so it was just me against the clock. Watching Muriel win silver in the 100, a few heats ahead of me was inspirational, and spurred me on to get the World Record, which I had been chasing since January. Job done, and the rest of the swims were a breeze, no pressure, pure fun.

The European Masters Swimming Championships in Rome will be remembered by Amanda Heath for improving the 100 and 200 meters breastroke world records and for her success on 200 meters individual medley. “I found out that with aging you can get quicker. This is the message that I want to send. I’ve been swimming quicker in this age group (65-69) than ever. You need lot of training to get these results”.

When she is in the water, Heath, British 65 years old swimming for the Spencer Swim Team, focuses on her performance. “During the race my attention is on the gliding technique. I don’t get distracted by time or other people”.

The lockdown didn’t stop her preparation. I think the lockdown helped me. I started doing dryland training, I committed to strenght and cardio exercises, and added yoga and tai chi chuan. When I went back to training in the pool I got benefits from that”.

Amanda Heath approached Masters swimming after a brief carrier as competitive swimmer. “My parents introduced me to swimming. In the pool I used to train I saw others diving from the board and from the platform. I tried too, but I decided that swimming would’ve been better. I started competing at 13. A few years later I quit and at 26 I competed in my first master competition.

The European Masters in Rome are over for the absolute protagonist of the breaststroke, who is looking forward to going back competing. “I like meeting new people, who eventually become friends, travelling to different places. This pushes me to continue my adventure in masters swimming”.
