Splendid Spencer second at Surreys

What a Saturday of racing we had! The largest number of Spencer swimmers ever went to Surreys to bring the trophy back home and… nearly did it. Woking was the winner and was a much bigger group so coming second overall it’s a super achievement. We did win the relays and that says something about our fantastic team spirit.

Big thank you to team captain Olegas Petrikas, who not only liaised with the organisers, arranged all relays and swam over 10 events, but also campaigned indefatigably to get as many swimmers as possible for this 2022 edition.

There were many superb performances across all age groups. Special mention to Max Baker, as this was his very first competition, and went back home with 4 relay medals, 1 gold and 3 bronzes. And welcome to Rob Fawn, who signed up specifically to race with us, we’re looking forward to having you in future competitions.

Barbara’s story
The Surreys was a fabulous event. It made for a great day to have so many Spencer members participate and support one another on pool side. It was a fun first gala for me on my road to shoulder recovery and I was delighted to be able to take part in 7 individual events and take home 6 golds and 1 silver.  I also participated in four relays which was super fun. I think we achieved a gold and two bronze. Thoroughly enjoyed the day and I really hope we can maintain a strong turn out at more events to come, especially the short course nationals in Oct

Ross’s story
A few bullets from me both individually and in the relays:
– 2ND in 200M free (Age 40-44)
– 3RD in Mixed Medley Relay (Age 200-239) – beating the A team! Alongside Chairman Mike, Diane R and Jane T
– PBs in every event (at least since my back operation) so a bit of progress, albeit very slow

(Ross you did brilliantly!)

James Draper ruthlessly demolished every single event he took part on… as he didn’t enter any times he was on all first heats, and he came second in his age group. Superb racing.

In form Fiona Wiggins won 7 medal, PBying in six out of seven races, remarkable!

The legends Godfrey Admans and Anders Christensen, with Karl Simpson and Willem Heskes. Winners of the medley and free relays in the 240-279 age group

Lastly well done to Willem Heskes, who for the second time in his life decided to hesitantly compete, winning 3 individual bronzes and 3 golds and 1 silver in relays.

Until next year!
